10-24-2016: So, we're doing something different, check it out..
Good afternoon Gators!
Student Government Association believes that unity and collaborationism amongst student organizations represent the importance of building a firm foundation to a more engaged, active, and empowered student body. Student leaders recognize in order to form a united and collaborative culture we must sustain a shared mindset, shared vision, a positive culture, a relationship-building focus, and a solution-oriented attitude. With this in mind, we decided to close the gap between each student organization and our student body. We believe that by supporting one another and becoming more united as a whole, it will build the foundation University of Houston-Downtown needs to have an empowered student body.
SGA will send out an email every Monday with the activities going on for the week. We will also provide future events so students can plan accordingly!
Please see the attached file see what is going on this week at UHD!

Everyone has a reason to vote!
-
Voting is a way to speak your mind and let your voice be heard! Your vote is your voice. When we vote, we are actually telling elected officials and lawmakers how we feel about education, public safety, social security, healthcare, and other important issues.
-
One voice, one vote really does count!
Remember: there is power in numbers, and when we vote and get our family members to vote, we can truly make a difference. If you don’t vote for what you believe in, others will – and you may not like the outcome. -
Our children are depending on us to represent their voices too! Because our children can’t vote, we have to do it for them. That’s how we make our concerns about schools, safety, housing, and other issues heard. When we vote, we are looking out for our kids, and their futures.
-
Voting changes communities!
Do you ever wonder why one neighborhood gets passed over for things it needs, while another seems to get it all? One big reason is voting. When we vote, we can get results that we can actually see. -
Vote to effect change!
It was through elections that we voted in officials who were champions for civil rights. Voting is our chance to make a difference in our own lives and within the world. -
Believe it or not, voting is a way of honoring our history!
As long as our country has existed, there have been people who didn’t want us to vote. There were several freedom fighters that stood up for the right to vote. Well, those times may seem ancient, but there are still people today who don’t want us to vote. It’s now our turn to stand up and vote to preserve the honor of those who went before us -
Last but not least, because it gives you credibility!
Often times, we voice our concerns to elected officials, but if we aren’t voting, our concerns may not matter at all to them. Voting can actually give you the credibility to make your concerns a top priority for legislators.

04-04-2016: Democracy's Challenge: Reclaiming the Public's Role
Dear UHD Community,
Tired of small talk? How about some big talk, breakfast & hot coffee? (see flyer & registration link pasted below)
The UHD Center for Public Deliberation invites you to attend our next forum entitled Democracy’s Challenge: Reclaiming the Public’s Role
WHEN AND WHERE IS IT? It will be held at UHD in Room A-300 on Wednesday April 6 from 9:30 am to 11:45 am.
WHERE DO I PARK IF I DON’T ATTEND UHD? Parking is free, but you must email Windy Lawrence at lawrencew@uhd.edu to reserve your visitor spot and have your name put on a list.
HOW DO I REGISTER? Please register at www.uhd.edu/cpd. Registration guarantees you a spot.
HOW DO I PREPARE? Participants in this forum will discuss and deliberate about the best direction our community to help more people prosper in our communities. It’s important that many members of our community be present – as this is an issue that affect many in our society. There will be three approaches discussed to help get the discussion started. The flyer for the event is below and the issue guide is attached (we will also have on our website). Please read the issue guide in preparation for the discussion.
DO I NEED TO BE AN EXPERT? You do not need to be an expert to participate. Your perspective and your experiences as a citizen is what is valuable for this conversation.
WHO CAN ATTEND? We invite students, staff, administrators, and external community members – people engaged in business, community, k – 12 initiatives, and every day folks.
IS THERE SOMETHING SPECIAL OUR UHD COMMUNITY CAN HELP WITH? We are asking for four things from students, faculty, staff, and administrators:
1) Please attend
2) Please bring two friends (have them register too)
3) If you teach, please encourage or offer extra credit opportunities for your students (we believe democratic skills are vital for all of our students - not just communication studies or political science- and absolutely worthy of extra credit in any course whose instructor wants their students to be a better citizen as a result of attending UHD.)
4) Please invite any members from the community, particularly who have perspectives in business, working in the community, K-12, or who are just interested in contributing to an important discussion that affects all of us.
WHO ARE WE COLLBABORATING WITH? We are working in collaboration with the American Democracy Project, LISC Greater Houston, UHD Student Government Association, Lone Star College, Center for Community Engagement & Public Service, UHD Center for Critical Race Studies, Institute for Business, Ethics, & Public Issues, High Impact Practices, National Issues Forums Institute and the Kettering Foundation.

11-04-2015: Calling All Student Orgs. - Gator Serve Contest!!!
Dear Gators,
We are excited to announce that the UHD Student Government Association and the Office of Student Activities will be hosting our first "Gators Serve" community service contest for student organizations. Earlier this year, UHD was recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a Community Engagement Institution; which means that our faculty, staff and STUDENTS are leaders in partnering with the greater Houston community to contribute to the public good. We want to encourage and celebrate all that our students do in the community by awarding and recognizing the student organization that logs the most volunteer hours in GatorSync, as outlined by the contest guidelines.
This is a great opportunity to showcase how your organization is having a positive impact in the community, and facilitating high impact learning opportunities to students through volunteerism. It is also a great way to connect with outside organizations. A great resource to find volunteer opportunities from all across the city is through Volunteer Houston. If you visit www.Volunteerhouston.org you can create a profile and have access to thousands of volunteer projects and agencies contained in Volunteer Houston’s database. If you have any questions on how to utilize Volunteer Houston’s database, please contact Volunteer Houston at (832) 613-9275.
Please see details of the contest below.
· Volunteer activities must be coordinated by a registered student organization in order to count for the contest. Students who are members of more than one group must submit their hours on behalf of the group sponsoring the activity. Students may only get credit for ONE student organization per event.
· Volunteer hours must be entered in GatorSync no later than 30 days following the service activity and approved by the organization advisor.
· Volunteer hours will be counted between November 1, 2015 and April 1, 2016.
· Student groups are encouraged to take pictures of their volunteer activities to promote the contest throughout the year.
· Student groups are encouraged to obtain an official letter or signed document from the volunteer site as proof of volunteer activity.
· Student groups are encouraged to collaborate with other organizations and departments in scheduling and attending volunteer activities.
· Registered student organizations may seek assistance from the Council of Finance for transportation and meals for service events.
The winning organization will receive:
· Banner/Banners recognizing the student organization as winners of the contest (south deck, 3rd floor main bldg., etc.)
· Trophy presentation from SGA at the end of the year
· “secret” prizes to be revealed at One Main Event.

12-21-2013: Youth Decide 2014
Over 40 years ago Uncle Sam caught on and enacted the 26th Amendment on July 1, 1971 -- allowing teens across the land to cast presidential ballots.
The next year a whopping 50 percent of 18-to-24-year-olds voted in that 1972 election, according to American Demographics magazine. Voting was as cool as protesting wars in patchouli-scented scarves and drag-racing for pinks.
But then something happened. America, and especially its teens and twenty-somethings, became disillusioned. These days only 59 percent of those in this group have actually registered to vote -- and only 19 percent of those registered actually vote.
During Youth Decide 2014 UH-Downtown Student Government Association is partnering with Battleground Texas and the League of Women Voters to bring the UHD community non-partisan information on the upcoming primary elections, voter registration, and LOTS AND LOTS of opportunities to GET INFORMED, and BE ENGAGED.
